Wedding invitation suite sitting on a blue, velvet surface

When putting together an invitation suite or even sending a Thank You Note or Birthday Card in the mail I love to be a little extra. Usually the way I achieve this is with an envelope liner!

If you have followed me for a while, you know my obsession with envelope liners is REAL!

If I need to add a little extra touch to a suite or card, I will likely pick a liner.

WHY:

Envelope liners are good for several different reasons:

  1. Spruce up an otherwise boring envelope
  2. Tie into your party theme
  3. An inexpensive touch that really adds to the entire look
  4. Tie into the details on your invite or card
  5. Easy DIY!

EXAMPLES:

Below I will be posting some of my favorite liners I have done as well as some liners that give me MAJOR inspiration. I will give some background on the liner choice, and how you can achieve the same look!

One of my favorite places to go to find patterned liners is Hobby Lobby.

All three images below have liners using 8.5″ x 11″ sheets of paper found at Hobby Lobby. One sheet of this size will give you 1 A7 (5 1/4″ x 7 1/4″) envelope liner, 2 A2 (4 3/8″ x 5 3/4″) envelope liners or 3 RSVP (3 5/8″ x 5 1/8″) envelope liners.

Each of these liners adds a great deal of detail to an otherwise plain envelope. Also, the second image ties into the Mermaid Theme of the party, setting the tone for that day.

The liners you see below are my real-life Christmas Cards! Since I was sending out quite a few of them (about 60) I knew I was going to be needing a lot of paper, that’s where a Paper Roll from Hobby Lobby came in handy! They have several styles to choose from and are 20″ long and 14″ wide. This will give you plenty of material to knock out your big liner orders! I was able to use the roll for all my cards and even had some left over! To get the exact liner I used click HERE. If you use your 40% coupon that $6 roll becomes a $3.60 roll. What a STEAL!

LINER TEMPLATES:

If you simply can’t find that perfect liner, sometimes you just have to make your own! I will be talking about a couple different ways to do this.

First: Download and print the pdf template below or trace your own liner on white watercolor paper. Start painting! As you can see below, I decided to go with an ombre effect!

Second: Print a detail from your invitation or card onto your liner. As you can see below I printed the same greenery from the invitation onto a piece of white cardstock at home and voila! Perfectly matching liner and invitation!

To print on your own liner download the appropriate liner template below:

(Note: these templates work best with envelopes from Cards and Pockets) Then place that pdf into the word processing or page layout program of your choice (make sure the PDF is set to 100% or it will not print at the correct size for your envelope). Then just add text boxes or graphics on top of your pdf template!

MAKE YOUR OWN LINERS (W/O A TEMPLATE):

To make your very own liners using any paper of your choice follow the steps below!

1. Pick your paper! (the fun part)

2. Pick your envelope!

3. Lay your paper face down on a smooth surface

4. Lay your envelope face down and open on top of the back of your paper

5. Make sure the envelope hangs off the edge of the paper just slightly (shown below)

6. Trace the envelope (make sure you trace as far down as you need to so it appears to fill the entirety of the envelope. Also make sure you round the corner that’s hanging off the edge of the paper)

7. Cut out your template

8. Insert your newly-cut liner into your envelope

9. Use an adhesive (I like to use Tombow Mono Permanent Adhesive) on the back top of the liner only

10. Stick the liner to the inside of your envelope flap

**If you want to take the easy route, go ahead and download the pdf template above and print that directly onto your patterned paper, cut and adhere!

There you have it! You’re very own custom Envelope Liner! You can use this trick for any size envelope you are wanting to line!

I hope this helped provide you with the confidence you need to tackle this fun DIY so you can start tricking out your envelopes!
